Memoir Workshop with Molly Brodak
“Life can only be understood backwards,” Kierkegaard wrote, “but it must be lived forwards.” The challenge to the memoirist is to somehow capture both on the page. In this workshop, we will focus on three key ideas through short discussions and activities: loyalty to the truth, narrative structure vs. lived experience, and how to handle exposing personal experiences in print, both privately and publicly. This workshop is aimed at helping beginners new to memoir tell their true stories. — Molly Brodak
Obsession: A Poetry Workshop
What, like a fixed star, is at the center of your heart? What is your hobbyhorse, your idée fixe, your charge? What hangs you up and infatuates? This poetry workshop will address the poetics of obsession. One in class writing assignment will guide you deeper into your obsession so that you become more fluent in the parts of its landscape that mystify you. How can you write the living daylights out of that thing that writes the living daylights out of you? As a point of entry into this workshop, begin to consider what keeps you. Is it something like god, or a birthmark, or an old love, or someone famous, or snow, or crying, or a single word? We will consider how poems get built up out of obsession and why. — Sabrina Orah Mark
Writing Workshops are free but an online RSVP is required. RSVP at http://thelettersfestival.org
